Kings beat Icepack 6-2

Sunday March 1, 2009 – Quincy Youth Arena

Another night of no-shows wasn’t as painful on the Kings as they beat Icepack 6-2 in front of a raucous crowd at Quincy Youth Arena. Paul scored twice, notching the gamewinner on a shorthanded 2-on-1 in the 2nd, and John and Pete both finished the night with 3 points. Filling in for our no-show defensemen, Burger and Greg played solid defense in front of Ed. The Kings scored early in the first when Pete and John connected on a well-executed breakout. The score was tied 2-2 when Greg got sent to the box for a questionable hooking call. On the ensuing PK, John and Paul managed to get the puck out into the neutral zone and John chipped it up the boards around a defender, walking in and finding Paul on the doorstep for the eventual gamewinner. The Kings held a 3-2 lead, but played tough defense helped by some great backchecking by the forwards. After some fisticuffs that got Wally ejected and put Burger in the box, Alan had an end-to-end rush up the right wing to score a backbreaking 4th goal with just under 7:00 left to play. The Icepack seemed to lose momentum and their goalie let in two more as the Kings cruised the rest of the way.

The win gives the Kings 29 points with a game left to play, enough to clinch the regular season division title. Good work guys. Let’s finish out the schedule with another win and keep it rolling into the playoffs.

We’ll need a lot more than that if Bob, Fran and Bermy don’t show.
