Kings inexcusably come up one second short, tie Hackers 4-4
Kings skated to a 4-4 tie with the Hackers Thursday evening at Walter Brown. The Kings were missing some regulars, but Alan, Mike, and Josh made a triumphant returns to the line-up. Pete is still with MIA ‘entertaining clients.’ The Kings jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period, but the Hackers kept skating, and we let them hang around to a certain extent. The Hackers eventually tied it up in the third period 3-3, but Greg (I belive) scored the go ahead go top dog glove side with around two minutes left to play. The Kings immediately went on the attack and Paul drew a penalty with about 1:30 to go. Shortly thereafter, the Hackers were called for a blatant off sides, and one of their players fired his stick from the in zone face off circle all the way to their bench. He was ejected and given a ten minute major penalty, but for some reason we didn’t play 5-3 (in general, the game was well officiate by NESHL standards despite some questionable icing rulings). Kings kept the in the Hackers zone for most of the rest of the period, the Hackers came up with a 3 on 2 that became a 3-1 with less than 5 seconds to play. Ed made the initial save, but I was unable to tie up the guy on the rebound and the Hackers tied it up with less than a second to play. So the Kings climb to regain first place was slightly derailed for an evening. But even on a night when we didn’t play our best hockey, and were outnumbered, we still should have won. It is great that we have these leads at the end of games, but we really need to clamp down and make sure we hold on for the W.
There was a strong showing of Kings at T’s after the game despite the disappointing outcome.
