Kings vs. Icepack: 6-3

Thursday, January 18, 2007 – UMass Boston

Recap

The Kings finally defeated the Icepack with a dominating performance in all aspects, running out to a 5-1 lead before giving up two goals as time was running down. The defense came out with 6 points on the night including 3 goals to go with a solid defensive effort that kept most of the shots on Ed from high in the zone. Ed came up huge time and again when they did get into the crease, stonewalling repeated shots including a kickass padstacker going across the crease. John came back and while he didn’t factor on the scoresheet he was all over the ice and had a couple great chances. Frank opened the scoring early in the first with a nice wrister from the point. After giving up the tying goal off a penalty kill, we took the lead and didn’t look back. Paul collected a pass in the slot and fired it past the goalie glove side, and then Burger buried a one-timer and Bob and Ian both had goals to extend our lead. After giving up a fluke goal, Alan provided the nail in the coffin with a sick end-to-end run with a top-shelf backhander. The Icepack got one back with seconds left in the game after a scrum in front of Ed, but the Kings came away with the victory, our first against the Icepack since our inaugural season. A great team effort from everyone.

Beautiful one-timer, Burger. You know these dudes are going to be thirsty for blood when we play them on Feb 22, so we’ll have to bring the same intensity again then.

It had been a while since we defeated the Icepack in a game that mattered, but we did beat them a few summers ago when we were routinely skating with 7-8 guys. That was part of our 10+ game win streak / first place finish, only to lose in the first round of the playoffs.

This is great news! Well done KINGS. I cannot wait until I return on 2/1/07, but I don’t think you need me. Especially if Burger is banging in one-timers!
